Having 'Too much fun' to Sell...
How Richard turned a chartered surveying practice with wrong payment terms and a £135,000 problem into a business he eventually sold at his number, and a life that includes planning permission for a helipad.
He walked out of my keynote and sacked his marketing company.
Then he called me.
THE SITUATION
Richard ran a chartered surveying practice. Profitable, reputable, busy. And structured in a way that was quietly and secretly bleeding him.
His team would take on a project, do all the work, carry all the risk, manage the entire client relationship, and then, only once everything was complete, submit the invoice. He was financing his clients’ projects with his own cash flow and calling it standard practice.
The outstanding ledger stood at £135,000. Not bad debts. Not clients who couldn’t pay. Work that had been done, delivered, signed off, and simply not yet invoiced, because that was the process.
On top of that, his operations were largely manual despite the technology available to him. His best clients had quietly learned that his commitment to exceptional service had no real boundary, and some were exploiting it. And Richard was at the centre of all of it, the point through which everything had to pass before it could move.
Profitable. Exhausted. No clear way out.
THE MEETING
In January 2018, Richard attended my Get BIG or Go Home keynote.
By the time he walked out, he had already saved £600 a month. He sacked the marketing company he’d been paying to handle his messaging, on the spot, because what I’d covered in the room had shown him clearly that what he was paying for wasn’t working and didn’t need to be outsourced at all.
His follow-up call was one of the most direct I’ve ever received.
“I’m in. Tell me when you can come over and when we can start.”
If a free keynote had delivered that, he said, he wanted to find out what the real work looked like.
THE WORK
Richard joined the Explorer Mastermind, with some Legacy 1:1 work alongside it.
The first two quarters were about finding the money already in the business.
The £135,000 outstanding ledger wasn’t a collection problem. It was a structural one. His payment terms meant he was always last in line, always waiting, always carrying the cost of work already delivered. We rebuilt how he invoiced, introduced staged payments tied to project milestones, and put proper collection systems in place. The backlog cleared. The cash flow changed.
Alongside that, we identified over £160,000 in savings and operational efficiencies, with ongoing annual savings exceeding £50,000. Technology that had been sitting idle was put to work. Three senior hires were made, plus five additional back-office staff. Client boundaries were set, politely but clearly, with those who had been taking advantage of his commitment to service.
Richard stopped being the answer to every question.
The business started running for SCALE.
THE OUTCOME
Within seven months, Richard had doubled the previous year’s entire annual revenue.
In the following twelve months, he doubled it again.
Four times his original revenue in under two years, without working more hours, as Richard chose to reduce his hours rather than increase them. The business grew anyway.
He was offered an acquisition.
He turned it down.
“I’m having too much fun building it again to think about selling it right now.”
National contracts followed. Industry referrals. Award recommendations. The practice that had been a profitable trap became a business the market recognised as worth acquiring. Eventually, on his terms and at his number, Richard sold to a competitor who had been watching what he’d built.
He now works for them part-time as a consultant, while pursuing other commercial real estate projects.
THE LEGACY LINE
Richard’s forever home has a private office, a riding/gun room, and a gym that would embarrass most five-star hotels. On one of the adjacent fields, he has planning permission to build a helipad, for when clients literally drop in.
He has become, since hitting his life-changing number, a man of few words.
The business that trapped him is gone. The business he built in its place was good enough to sell at his number. The life on the other side of that sale is the one he designed.
He didn’t need a bigger business. He needed a better-structured one. The £135,000 wasn’t a debt. It was proof that the business was working for everyone except Richard.
Once that changed, everything changed.
If Richard’s story sounds familiar, profitable but poorly structured, busy but not free, the first step is understanding exactly where you stand.
The Business Freedom Assessment takes less than ten minutes and costs nothing. It tells you precisely what needs to change first.
