How do I know who is the right coach?

As a veteran of my time in the British Armed Forces, my coaching approach mirrors the meticulous and caring nature of my former role as an advanced combat trauma medic. I run a well established business, what can you do for me?

Congratulations, that’s great news. I’m pleased that you’ve got this far without the help or support of a business coach!

However, I often compare this scenario to a game of golf! (Not that I am any good at golf!) Imagine for one moment 2 people are setting out to play golf.

One has chosen to book a series of lessons with the Golf professional at the local golf club, and goes every week for a lesson, whilst the other heads out first to the driving range, and quickly moves to their first round.

The latter of these plays golf far quicker than the former. And, if they do this frequently soon learn through trial and error, brute force and ignorance to become quite a good golfer. Whilst the other may have started slowly, 8 years later one is playing in the masters whilst the other still watches it on TV from the local municipal golf clubhouse!

On a more personal note, my brother and I were both taught music from an early age. I was always the entertainer, whereas he was always the musician. All these years later I can still play a good tune whilst he is conducting orchestras all over the world!

Do you work with family businesses?

Absolutely! I have extensive experience working with both couple-run and family-run businesses. The dynamic of working as a couple or within a family-run business can be exceptionally rewarding due to the shared goals and passions among all employees.

The unique work-life balance in these setups often amplifies the drive and determination to succeed. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that challenges may arise. Can you share a little about your background?

Sure.  I initially studied in Nottingham for an HND in Sociology and Psychology with a particular interest in Communication and Human Behaviour.  I went on to qualify as a social worker to work with disadvantaged children.  However, quickly determined there was far too much politics involved in social work and began looking for a career change.

Many of my friends at that time had seen all the adverts for “The Army needs YOU” in the run-up to the Falklands War, and had joined the Armed Forces.  By the time I was becoming more disillusioned with my career choice to date, they all had qualified and deployed and were coming home with Money, Girlfriends and War Stories.

I joined the Army as a Combat Medic, initially to do the minimum 3-year term.  But quickly fell in love with the work hard, play harder mentality and the fact that no two days were ever the same. I served for slightly over 12 years, rising through the ranks and responsibilities, before a series of ‘incidents’ eventually saw me Medically discharged in 2003.

Since then, I’ve worked at the Directorship level for one of the UK’s largest Supermarket chains and at the Regional Management level within the Public Sector in both Change Management and Training & Development, before branching out into the world of entrepreneurship.

I’ve either bought, acquired or set up four of my own businesses, currently sit on the Exec Board for a Senior Leadership Think Tank, and have recently completed a role as Chair of the Board for a Registered Charity.

What is 'Ethical Coaching'?

Firstly, I need to share, that when we first launched the business back in May 2014, we were My TrueNORTH Limited.  The strapline ‘The Ethical Coaching Company’ was added in 2017, when we shortlisted, and subsequently won the title by one of the largest private investment management, accountancy and tax advisory companies in the UK.
