The British Armed Forces are regarded as one of the most professional fighting forces in the world.
Special operations forces are the most highly disciplined, mission-capable, and formidable units in the world. They go through rigorous selection processes and training in order to conduct unconventional warfare tasks that are beyond the means of standard military forces. The truth is, the world may never know exactly what these teams have accomplished, but their public records contain enough to earn global respect.
I DO NOT claim to have ever been a member of any of the worlds most elite forces units. However, having served as a Rapid Deployment Advanced Trauma Medic, I have worked alongside them and been responsible for providing the specialist logistical support in order they are able to do what they do. From this, I have seen and experienced first hand the skills, knowledge, training and experience they have in taking a problem and turning it into the desired outcome.
Since leaving the Armed Forces, I have implemented this within my own post service career, and gone on to work at boardroom level for some of the UK’s largest high street brands, before branching out as an Entrepreneur. In military terms a ‘Battleplan‘ is your MISSION. It outlines what the objectives are, and when these need to be achieved. It’s a live strategic document designed to ensure EVERYONE understands the MISSION, and both HOW and WHEN this is to be achieved, including WHO is responsible for WHAT.
In a Business, this starts with a Vision and becomes a Business plan. They are NOT simply something you have to do if you need funding, they are the ROADMAP that enable you to work effectively towards your desired outcomes.
I’d never completed a business plan before, and had no idea how much impact it would have. I only wish I’d done this from the start!
Once the Battle plan has been agreed, it’s down to the Operational Command to determine HOW the MISSION is going to be achieved. This will include logistics, planning and definitive execution to ensure the right people are in the right place with the right equipment and briefing to ensure all actions taken are working towards the desired outcomes.
In business this is about ensuring the team are aware of and have bought into the goals of the business and fully understand the role and “Arc’s” they will operate within to achieve all that is required.
The content was delivered in such a manner, I was able to implement this immediately and report back positively by the next meeting
No plan ever survives first contact withe the enemy! And just as on the battlefield, within business also there will always be the unknown unknowns! It’s pivotal to the success of the mission that we are able to identify early, problems which may otherwise prevent us from achieving our objectives. And to establish what additional resource is required in order to overcome these set-backs.
I’d never stopped to think of it this way, and yet when its taught it makes a life changing difference to both you, and how you approach business.
Once we’ve got everything working, we need ot KEEP it working, and that requires re-supply and logistical support. The QM might be overlooked at the heart of battle, however their role can NEVER be underestimated. They are the BACK OFFICE engine which keeps everything working IN ORDER you can ensure the main thing remains the main thing!
