Yesterday, I met one of my Pillars of Progress clients face-to-face for session 5 of 12.
It was his first coaching session since before Christmas.

I opened with the usual: “Happy New Year! How was your time off?”

His response stopped me in my tracks.

“THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER.”

Jay Allen - Scale & Exit Mentor to Accidental Business Owners celebrating Christmas 2025

He went on:

“We’ve had proper quality time with the kids — board games, time outside, the lot. We’ve done a few hours of admin between Christmas and New Year, but it’s been genuinely chilled and relaxing.”

Then came the part that made me smile.

“I’m usually itching to get back to work by New Year’s Day. I’m a highly proactive guy — often running around like a blue-arsed fly trying to get everything done. Sitting on my arse for two weeks normally gets too much.”

“But this year was different. I’m itching to get back to work… because I can see what Pillars of Progress is going to do for the business. And how moving into a Taste of Freedom means I’m gonna be able to spend time with the kids whenever I want.”

We wrapped up the session, and as he stood to leave… we ended up in a proper tight Man hug.

Not a polite handshake.
Not a nod-and-wave.
A proper, shoulder-clasping, emotional hug.

Because when a driven entrepreneur discovers he’s not just building a better business — he’s reclaiming his life — that’s worth celebrating.

I left the room buzzing.
Not because of some massive revenue win or unicorn client breakthrough.

Because this is what real transformation looks like.
Not on a spreadsheet.
Not fully in a bank balance (yet).

In board games with kids who get your full presence.
In two weeks of genuine recharge.
And in a hug that says, “Mate, we’ve cracked something fundamental here.”

The Silent Prison Most Business Owners Don’t See

Let me paint the picture most of my clients lived before we met.

You’re the kind of person who thrives on momentum.

  • Deals to close.

  • Problems to solve.

  • Systems to tweak.

  • Revenue to chase.

You’re proactive to your core.
The world moves at your pace — or you make it move faster.

Christmas comes, and while everyone else unwinds, you’re pacing.

  • Checking emails “just in case”.

  • Jotting down ideas for Q1.

  • Feeling that itch because stillness feels like waste.

It’s not an addiction to work.
It’s an addiction to control.
To impact.
To know that what you’ve built still needs you breathing down its neck.

But here’s the trap nobody warns you about:

That itch isn’t ambition anymore.
It’s anxiety wearing ambition’s clothes.

Your business has you on a leash.

  • You can’t disconnect because everything depends on you.

  • You can’t relax because opportunities feel fragile.

  • You can’t be present with your kids because your brain’s still three tabs deep in tomorrow’s to-do list.

Christmas becomes proof of the prison:
Two weeks of “time off” that feel like two weeks of half-presence.
Board games with one eye on your phone.
Walks where you’re mentally miles away.

You love your family.
You love your business.
But something’s got to give.

And usually, it’s you.

The Pillars of Progress Moment

Pillars of Progress isn’t a programme.
It’s a deliberate engineering job on the foundations of your business.

We don’t start with tactics or hacks.
We start with diagnosis:

  • Where are you still the bottleneck?

  • What dependencies keep you chained?

  • What’s preventing the business from running without your fingerprints?

Session by session (12 in total), we build the four pillars that turn accidental operators into Strategic CEOs:

  1. Pillar 1: Clarity — Get brutally clear on where your time goes vs where it should go.

  2. Pillar 2: Systems — Build the machine that scales without stealing your soul.

  3. Pillar 3: Team — Right people, right seats, right accountability (without the HR headaches).

  4. Pillar 4: Freedom Metrics — Track what actually matters: time reclaimed, choices restored, life enhanced.

By session 5, something shifts.
You’re not just doing the work.
You’re seeing the machine take shape.

Suddenly, Christmas isn’t a guilt-filled pause.
It’s a genuine preview of the life you’re building toward.
And that hug at the end of the session? Proof that the shift isn’t just intellectual. It’s visceral.

“The Best Christmas Ever”: What Actually Changed

Let’s unpack what my client discovered, because this isn’t theory. This is a real-time transformation.

Before Pillars:
Christmas = tolerance.

  • Quality time felt stolen from momentum.

  • Downtime triggered restlessness.

  • The itch to “get back” was really the fear of falling behind.

After 5 Sessions:
Christmas = recharge.

  • Board games became presence, not distraction.

  • Time outside felt restorative, not wasted.

  • The itch to return? Pure excitement.

Why?
Because he could see the destination.

A Taste of Freedom.
Not retirement.
Not selling out.
The ability to:

  • Work when you’re on.

  • Disconnect when you’re off.

  • Show up fully for family, cycling, podcasting, keynotes — whenever you choose.

He didn’t burn out.
He didn’t hire a massive team overnight.
He simply started replacing dependency with design.

And that one shift, validated by a face-to-face session and a heartfelt hug, turned “two weeks of tolerance” into “THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER.”

Why This Hits So Hard for Proactive Types

If you’re nodding right now, it’s because you know exactly who this story’s for.

The blue-arsed fly entrepreneurs.
The ones who:

  • Outwork everyone in the room.

  • Build businesses that hum… but only when they’re humming too.

  • Secretly envy the founder who’s skiing in January without the business imploding.

You’re not lazy.
You’re not failing.
You’re just playing a solo game when you need an orchestra.

The itch you feel isn’t a flaw.
It’s a signal.
Your ambition is ready for a bigger stage.

Pillars of Progress hands you the baton.
And when you feel that shift in person — well, that’s hug-worthy.

The Other Side of the Coin

Fast-forward to session 12.
What does “Taste of Freedom” actually deliver?

  • Your calendar bends to your life, not the other way round. Family board games? Non-negotiable. Charity rides? Locked in. Client crises? Handled by the systems you built.

  • Revenue grows without your hours spiking. The machine compounds while you sleep, cycle, or connect.

  • Presence becomes your superpower. Kids get the dad who’s actually there. Clients get the leader who’s fully charged. You get the energy you thought you’d lost.

  • The itch transforms. No longer anxiety-fuelled. Now it’s creative hunger — because you trust the business to hold the fort.

This isn’t “work-life balance” fluff.
It’s business engineering for humans who refuse to choose between impact and family.

Your “Best Christmas Ever” Starts Here

If his story stirred something, that mix of recognition, possibility, and quiet resolve, this is your signal.

You don’t need 12 sessions to start.
You need clarity on where the prison bars are.

That’s exactly what the Business Freedom Assessment delivers.
In under 15 minutes, it reveals:

  • Your current dependency score (how much your business still owns you).

  • The hidden pillars are cracking under the weight.

  • Your first three shifts toward Taste of Freedom.

My client didn’t stumble into his breakthrough.
He engineered it — pillar by pillar.
Celebrated it — face-to-face, with a hug.
Now Christmas proves the machine works.

Yours can too.
