“If you don’t build your dream, someone else will hire you to build theirs”

I’ve always loved that saying, but there are many others that are equally as sobering! You see, as the business owner, YOU GET TO CHOOSE! You get to choose when, where, with who and for how much, and that’s GREAT.

So when you sell out for £50Million on your 35th birthday, (Adam) that’s your fault! or when you jack it all in, and go back to that job you were offered working for your uncle Frank, that’s your fault too! You see, as an entrepreneur everything is down to you, your attitude, your determination, your choices, your action!

I’ve seen many a business owner sit between Christmas and New Year with the last years business bank statements, shaking their head in almost dis-belief, that they have worked so hard all year, and that is what they have to show for it “Well, it’s not all bad” they might say trying to reassure themselves that “It’s been a really tough year” and that “Well, at least were still in business, maybe next year will be better?”

…..and my question to those people is simple “Will it?”

Is 2017 going to be any better than 2016?

You see, I’ve just finished my Business planning for 2017! It began in about October 2016, when I picked up a whole host of glossy brochures from the travel agent, and began thumbing through the pages of where I’d like to visit for my holidays this year! I picked where, and when and for how long. I considered what I’d like to do whilst I’m there (Which trips, excursions, concerts I might want to attend etc.) and plotted it onto my 2017 wall chart.

I’d also like to change my car this year, so spent some time visiting various garages and test driving the various makes and models that caught my eye, so I knew which of the garages I’ll be placing my order with in the next month or so.

I’m also considering moving house this year. So I needed to spend some time looking at where I’d like to live, the size of house I’d like to live in, and all the details around moving (when, where, how etc.) It turns out the company who are going to move me are happy to do it WHILST I’m on holiday, which is GREAT. I can leave them with the keys to one, and simply return to my new home 3 weeks later!

You might think I’m nuts, right?

WRONG! Like many other Entrepreneur’s, I now know THIS is the right way to plan your year, and only once you have determined what YOU want to do, do you THEN return to the business and establish when are you going to be available to work, and how much does IT need to provide for you, in order to make all those dreams a reality?

Then you can review last years business performance and determine “Is your business fit for purpose, is it performing the way you require it to, or does it need to be placed on performance management?”
