With the end of the business year FASTLY approaching, I always STOP and review what we’ve been doing over the past 12 months, as we plan as to where we are and where we are going to be by the same time next year, looking at whats working well and what we need to review and amend.
You see whilst lots of people might remark “We’ve had a great year this year” or “Things have been really tough this year” it’s rare they have the actual EVIDENCE to back this up, its just been a feeling or a hunch!
We use a series of dashboards within our business to have an accurate and up to the minute evidence to back up our assumptions as to how the year has gone, and it helps massively in determining where our efforts and attention needs to lie.
I’d also like to pose one hugely important question if I may?
WHY are you in business?
You might argue this is easy, but in actual fact, it’s often NOT!
You see I hear many answers to this question, but they are often based on WHAT you do in business, or who you do it for? but not WHY?
I’m currently in business to build my dream home and outbuildings on a large plot of land in the South of France. To enable me to provide both Mastermind coaching, holiday lets and a recording studio from home, and support both business owners, armed forces service leavers and their families and musicians (The three things I am most passionate about)
I also know WHEN I aim to ‘put my spade in the ground’ and how much I’ll need to do this, and so my business dashboards are vital in enabling me to ensure we are on track to deliver my goals in the timeframe I have set for this to happen.
Another GREAT example of this was when one of our clients turned down a large 6 figure contract to provide a bespoke piece of software to their business. The amount we are talking is by some margin the largest single contract they would have EVER won, dwarfing ALL other contracts by around 14 times! But they turned it down!
You see, they also had a plan, a goal a 5-year exit plan (From startup) and ALL decisions were based on a set date and a set amount!
It’s only when we have absolute clarity on WHY we are in business, then we can truly create measures to determine if 2017 has been a good year or not!
