Ever had that moment when two experts tell you completely opposite things?
I just did. There I was, dealing with some back pain, and decided to be proactive about it. You know how it goes – you want to get on top of these things before they become a real problem. So I consulted two professionals: a chiropractor and a physiotherapist.
Guess what happened?
When Experts Disagree: Finding Clarity Through Conflicting Business Advice
One took a far more cautionary approach, suggesting a comprehensive and prolonged treatment program.
The other? “You’re fine, carry on!”
What’s fascinating is that both these approaches stem from their unique professional backgrounds – years of specialized training, different methodological frameworks, and distinct areas of expertise. Each was offering guidance based on what they’ve seen work best within their field of practice.
Talk about confusion!
But here’s the thing – this whole experience got me thinking about what I see every day in my role as a scale-up and exit mentor.
Think about the last time you asked for business advice.
Maybe you turned to a friend who runs their own company, or perhaps you sought guidance from someone like me. Did you notice how different the perspectives were?
Let’s be honest – it can feel a bit like being stuck between a rock and a hard place, can’t it?
Your friend, drawing from their battle scars and victories, might tell you to play it safe. “Don’t expand too quickly,” they warn, sharing horror stories from their own journey.
And you know what? Their advice comes from a good place. They’ve been there, done that, and have the torn t-shirt to prove it.
But then you sit down with a professional mentor like myself, and suddenly the conversation shifts.
Instead of cautionary tales, we’re talking about systematic growth, market analysis, and strategic scaling.
It’s like switching from watching a horror movie to reading a technical manual – same subject, completely different approach.
Sound familiar?
Here’s what I’ve realized through my years of mentoring – maybe this confusion isn’t such a bad thing.
Think about it: when was the last time any significant business decision was truly black and white?
The beauty of getting conflicting advice is that it forces you to think critically. It’s like your brain goes into detective mode.
You start asking yourself questions:
- Why are these perspectives so different?
- What assumptions is each person making?
- What pieces of the puzzle might they be missing?
And isn’t that exactly what we need as business owners? The ability to take different viewpoints, analyze them, and forge our own path forward?
Take my back pain situation. The cautious approach might prevent further injury, but it could also lead to unnecessary weakness. The “carry on as normal” advice might maintain strength but risks aggravating the issue. I see this same pattern play out daily in my work with business owners.
In my role as a mentor, I’ve learned that simply throwing solutions at people isn’t enough. What’s more valuable is helping them develop a framework for making decisions. I’ve seen enough businesses to know that what works for one might sink another. Instead of just saying “do this” or “don’t do that,” By ultilizing our accredited #ADDAZERO Methodology I help my clients understand the why behind different approaches.
But here’s the million-dollar question:
how do you actually make sense of conflicting advice?
Start by asking yourself:
What’s the context behind each piece of advice?
Your friend who advises extreme caution – did they expand too quickly and get burned?
When I suggest aggressive growth to my clients – it’s not a hunch or a personal opinion, but more than 10 years of #ADDAZERO data that makes me so confident?
Think of it like being a chef. You’ve got one person telling you to follow the recipe exactly, while another encourages you to experiment. Neither is wrong – they’re just cooking different dishes for different occasions.
The real magic happens when you stop looking for the “right” answer and start building your own recipe for success. Take what resonates from both perspectives. Maybe your friend’s caution about cash flow management combines perfectly with the strategic growth framework I might suggest.
You know what’s funny?
Sometimes the most valuable thing about getting conflicting advice isn’t the advice itself – it’s what happens in your head while you’re processing it. Every time you wrestle with opposing viewpoints, you’re building stronger business muscles. You’re developing judgment. You’re learning to trust your instincts while respecting expertise.
And isn’t that what being a successful business owner is all about?
So the next time you find yourself caught between conflicting pieces of advice, remember my back pain story. Remember that sometimes the path forward isn’t about choosing between two extremes – it’s about finding your own way through the middle, guided by both experience and expertise.
After all, your business journey is uniquely yours. While mentors like me can light the way, you’re the one who has to walk the path. Wouldn’t you rather walk it with the wisdom of multiple perspectives than the limitation of a single view?
What conflicting advice have you received lately?
How did you handle it?
Maybe it’s time to see those contradictions not as obstacles, but as opportunities to grow stronger in your decision-making.
Because at the end of the day, isn’t that what building a successful business is really about?
