Are YOU sabotaging YOUR own Success?

I’ve witnessed recently that many business owners find themselves caught in a cycle of overwork, neglecting their health and well-being in the pursuit of success. They put everything before themselves, with the never-fulfilled promise to themselves that “Once I’ve…”, ”…then I’ll be able to …”

This self-sabotage can have significant consequences not only for their personal lives and that of their families but also for their businesses.

The Cost of Overworking

Are you among the many business owners who believe that working longer hours is a testament to their dedication and commitment?

According to Mental Health UK’s Burnout Report, 91% of UK adults experienced high or extreme levels of stress in the past year, with one in five workers needing to take time off due to stress-related issues. This trend is particularly pronounced among small business owners, with 56% reporting poor mental health over the past year.

The Impact on Health

The physical toll of overworking is significant. Long hours and lack of sleep can lead to a host of health issues, including an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. A study conducted in Taiwan found that workers who predominantly sit throughout their working day have a 34% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those who are more active. Furthermore, many small business owners report surviving on less than five hours of sleep per night, exacerbating health problems and reducing their ability to function effectively.

But that’s not all…

Poor Decision-Making and Risk

Burnout affects both physical health and cognitive function. A study by the University of Surrey found that burnt-out workers are more likely to make risky and irrational decisions. This can have a cascading effect on a business, leading to poor strategic choices and potentially jeopardizing the company’s future.

The Vicious Cycle of Burnout

The pressure to succeed often leads business owners to put their business before themselves, creating a vicious burnout cycle. The Mental Health Foundation found that 45% of entrepreneurs have experienced mental health problems, with work-life imbalance being a significant contributing factor. This imbalance not only affects their personal lives but also impacts business performance. Our own research (which led to the evolution of #ADDAZERO) clearly shows that when leaders are emotionally and physically drained, their ability to lead effectively diminishes, affecting the entire organisation.

The Financial Implications

The financial implications of burnout are substantial. With more than one-third of working adults experiencing high-stress levels, businesses face increased absenteeism and reduced productivity. This affects the bottom line and places additional strain on the NHS, with research suggesting that improving personal health could save the NHS £1.2 billion annually.
