Ever since I updated my business card and LinkedIn profile to identify myself as a SCALE mentor,
the question “Isn’t that just another word for business coach?” is asked with more and more frequency.
So in this article, I’d like to demystify what is a SCALE mentor and how that differs from that of a business coach, leadership coach or executive coach etc
Two of entrepreneurs’ favourite topics are growth and scaling in business. The words are thrown around a lot, but perhaps with little real knowledge or understanding as to the actual difference between the two.
Many people use these words to mean the same thing: a business that is growing quickly, effectively, sustainably are all terms I’ve heard people use to determine their understanding of what growth / scale is!
Isn’t SCALE just growing quickly?
No. There is a crucial difference between growth and scale in business terms, and it’s important to understand what really happens when businesses grow and what kind of growth you should be looking for.
What is Growth in Business?
When a business grows, it is increasing the revenue equally as fast as they are adding resources to enable that increase. The business may win a new £50,000 contract, but in order to do so they had to hire a new member of staff with a £50,000 overall renumeration cost. The company’s gains and losses are evened out, so even though the company is growing — by one new employee and a corresponding uptick in revenue — it really has not gained much value. Yes, the new employee, may well have capacity to service a number of other clients as well, but generally one increase has had little impact on the overall growth of the business.
What is Scaling in Business?
When businesses scale, they add revenue at a faster rate than they take on new costs. A company that is scaling may gain £50,000 in new revenue for which they spent £5,000 on marketing to introduce them and their products/services more efficiently to a wider target audience. The business’s gains outpaced its losses, allowing it not only to grow but also to scale.
Who do you work with?
Business Leaders/Owners who want to achieve Significant and Sustainable SCALE within their business. Even before you launch your business, you should already be thinking about a strategy for scaling your start-up — not for growing. If you simply continue trying to increase your revenue by adding more resources with a corresponding increase in costs, your growth is likely to stagnate. You will get to a point where you realize the effort to grow simply isn’t worth the financial gain.
Using a combination of having worked within both SME & PLC. And either bought, acquired or set up 4 of my own businesses (Scaled and Exited twice). I have determined there are 8 elements within every business, which need to be recognised and worked on simultaneously to ensure stability. There are also 3 phases in which all businesses need to progress through as they evolve in order to both significantly and sustainable move from Start up, through Growth/Scale to Exit.
So, whether you are right at the very beginning of your journey and about to set up on your own, or a CEO of a multi-national corporate organisation seeking to ‘leave a legacy’ our proven patented methodology determines you are able to apply the right thinking and right actions at the right time and element to Significantly and Sustainable SCALE.
